The other day you were shopping at the supermarket and a customer in front of you was buying food with food coupons. Perhaps the same thing happened to you? The person in front of me, who was receiving food stamps, purchased a lot of non-essential things like sodas, chips, and snacks. To top it off, I noticed that they were an obese family, which made sense given the items they were buying.
Again, it scared me that we subsidize health care for those who can afford it, but judging by the products they buy and eat, they don’t care about their own health. My own health insurance has gone up 30% in the last two years, and the cost of health care for all Americans has gone up 8% every year. I think we all know that all of our purchases will be controlled by the government as people buy food with loyalty cards and food stamps one day.
In fact, grocery stores already know what you buy as part of their loyalty rewards programs. There are now online companies that work with food stamps and food manufacturers. This means that large companies are sharing information about you. They also know that the data and information stored in their data centers are not always well protected.
But what about consumer privacy? What if they trust the grocery store, but not always Groupon? As a consumer, you are. Tracked through the products you buy. In addition, you receive vouchers from this online marketplace and you will find that new vouchers appear on the back of receipts at the supermarket checkout. Do you see all the problems associated with this? If companies collect data and governments want it, they can obviously get it.
Also, if the government took over responsibility for health care, they could easily say they have a right to that information to make sure people are eating properly to reduce health care costs. I’m not sure that’s the society I belong to or was born into. I have always believed that the United States of America is a country of freedom and peace, not an intrusive government.
If you don’t see the relevance, maybe you should think about this. I understand that many people are indifferent, but I also feel that they are too gullible to understand all the ramifications and future implications. Feel free to think about it and email us if you have any comments or feedback.
