Step One

Your bottle then makes its way to a bottle recycling facility, where it is shredded into tiny pieces. Bottle caps made of stronger plastic will not work with polyester thread, so we’ll have to figure out a way to pull them out. Caps are made of large floating plastic, which is convenient. When the plastic is run through water, the undesirable bottle caps are sifted away.
After soaking the plastic in water and chemicals for 10 hours and drying it, what’s left are clean, clear chunks of plastic. Done? No, not yet. We won’t be able to stitch the plastic particles into board shorts. The mixture is then passed via hot pipes, melting the plastic. To manufacture thread, molten plastic is poured through microscopic pores to form filaments, which are 5 times finer than human hair!
Step Three
So, now that we have thread, are we ready to go? Not yet! Finally, we rip it apart again to get the raw material we need to produce polyester! Really. In a process similar to that of cotton manufacture, plastic filaments are broken into fluff, which is then toughened into polyester thread.
